After an epic twenty-year journey through the entirety of human culture-the biggest cross-continuity "universe" that is conceivable-Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill conclude both their legendary League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and their equally legendary comic-book careers with the series' spectacular fourth and final volume, The Tempest. Want to share IMDb's rating on your own site? So many pastiches and I have to comment on a comic book? In an alternate Victorian Age world, a group of famous contemporary fantasy, science fiction, and adventure characters team up on a secret mission. When I first saw the trailers for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I was both excited and apprehensive. Tempest is not only the final chapter in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series but, according to Alan Moore, is the last comic he will ever work on. Hopefully, Adler will come into its own with time. Ah yes, but The League of Extraordinary Gentleman is not just any comic book! My biggest problem with the film was the characters, who were stale and boring. What we have here is a tightly written homage to the grand adventure stories of yesteryear with a dark twist that only writer Alan Moore (From Hell) could envision. At its finest, Adler is a delightful, progressive penny dreadful that reminds readers of its Victorian inspirations. In the 1780's it was called the Society Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. In my opinion, Moore is EASILY the greatest comic writer in history which makes this a huge event. "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" assembles a splendid team of heroes to battle a plan for world domination, and then, just when it seems about to become a real corker of an adventure movie, plunges into incomprehensible action, idiotic dialogue, inexplicable motivations, causes without effects, effects without causes, and general lunacy. This one isn't for everyone, but it's still good in my book. The series spans several volumes. Being an avid fan of the comic book (by Alan Moore) upon which League is based, I was curious to see whether the film would remain true to the spirit of the comic, or whether Hollywood would just totally run roughshod over it.
